{"id":4518,"date":"2019-05-03T11:02:25","date_gmt":"2019-05-03T09:02:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nil.uniza.sk\/?p=4518"},"modified":"2019-05-31T12:18:24","modified_gmt":"2019-05-31T10:18:24","slug":"running-fortigate-fw-vm-inside-of-gns3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nil.uniza.sk\/en\/running-fortigate-fw-vm-inside-of-gns3\/","title":{"rendered":"Running Fortigate FW VM inside of GNS3"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In this post we describe how to run Fortigate FW VM appliance inside of the GNS3 (local or remote).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Prerequisities and environment<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>GNS3<ul><li>In my case of version 2.1.1 running on a remote linux server (physical HW, not GSN3 VM).<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Fortigate VM Image for KVM<ul><li>In my case  FortiGate for KVM platform Version 6.2.<\/li><li>Download from <a href=\"https:\/\/support.fortinet.com\/Download\/VMImages.aspx\">HERE <\/a>using  Fortigate.ONE account (may create for free). <\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>GNS3 Fortigate Appliance<ul><li>Download from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gns3.com\/marketplace\/appliance\/fortigate\">HERE.<\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"> <em>Note: FortiGate VM evaluation license<\/em> <\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p> FortiGate VM includes a limited embedded 15-day trial license that supports:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>1 CPU maximum<\/li><li>1024 MB memory maximum<\/li><li>low encryption only (no HTTPS administrative access)<\/li><li>all features except FortiGuard updates<\/li><li>You cannot upgrade the firmware, doing so will lock the Web-based Manager until a license is uploaded. Technical support is not included. The trial period begins the first time you start FortiGate VM. After the trial license expires, functionality is disabled until you upload a license file. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Steps<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p> There are only few steps and the process is straightforward:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Download and save the fortigate VM image.<\/li><li>Import appliance into GNS3.<\/li><li>Run a project and use the appliance!<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"> <br>Step 1) Download the Fortigate VM Image<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Go on the <a href=\"https:\/\/support.fortinet.com\/Main.aspx\">Fortinet support page <\/a>and login. To proceed you need a Fortinet.ONE account (available to create and register for free). <\/li><li> Then use the menu Download -&gt; VM Images. <\/li><li> Select  Product -&gt; Fortigate<\/li><li> Select Platform -&gt; KVM and download <\/li><li> Select version<\/li><li> And download &#8220; <em>New deployment of FortiGate for KVM <\/em>&#8230;. &#8220; not the &#8222;Upgrade from previous version &#8230;&#8220;<\/li><li>Downloaded zip file contains the only one file -&gt; fortios.qcow2<\/li><li>We may uncompress it somewhere on our PC, I prefer your Download folder which the GSN3 appliance will search through. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img alt=\"\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"524\" src=\"https:\/\/nil.uniza.sk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/2019-05-03-12_07_29-Fortinet-Service-Support-1024x524.png\" class=\"wp-image-4529\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nil.uniza.sk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/2019-05-03-12_07_29-Fortinet-Service-Support-1024x524.png 1024w, https:\/\/nil.uniza.sk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/2019-05-03-12_07_29-Fortinet-Service-Support-300x153.png 300w, https:\/\/nil.uniza.sk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/2019-05-03-12_07_29-Fortinet-Service-Support-768x393.png 768w, https:\/\/nil.uniza.sk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/2019-05-03-12_07_29-Fortinet-Service-Support.png 1500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 2) Import the image into GNS3<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Download the GNS3 Fortinet appliance at  <br><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gns3.com\/marketplace\/appliance\/fortigate\">https:\/\/www.gns3.com\/marketplace\/appliance\/fortigate<\/a> and place it into your download folder. The file is named fortigate.gns3a. <\/li><li>Start your GNS3 software<\/li><li>Import the <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.gns3.com\/1_3RdgLWgfk4ylRr99htYZrGMoFlJcmKAAaUAc8x9Ph8\/index.html\">GNS3 appliance<\/a>, into the GNS3 software.  It requires<ul><li>Click <strong>File<\/strong> and then Import appliance<\/li><li>Goto your Downloads folder, select the Fortigate appliance and then click Open<\/li><li>The  <strong>Add appliance<\/strong> window will display where click Next<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img alt=\"\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/nil.uniza.sk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/2019-05-03-12_19_38-GNS3.png\" class=\"wp-image-4534\" width=\"488\" height=\"347\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nil.uniza.sk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/2019-05-03-12_19_38-GNS3.png 688w, https:\/\/nil.uniza.sk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/2019-05-03-12_19_38-GNS3-300x214.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 488px) 100vw, 488px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Now we need to select the Server type used. From the official GNS3 <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.gns3.com\/1_3RdgLWgfk4ylRr99htYZrGMoFlJcmKAAaUAc8x9Ph8\/index.html\">tutorial <\/a>the GNS3 VM is recommended and it should work. However, we are using remote GNS3 server so only this option is available in our case, so no selection and click Next <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img alt=\"\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/nil.uniza.sk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/2019-05-03-12_28_06-GNS3.png\" class=\"wp-image-4537\" width=\"542\" height=\"384\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nil.uniza.sk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/2019-05-03-12_28_06-GNS3.png 687w, https:\/\/nil.uniza.sk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/2019-05-03-12_28_06-GNS3-300x213.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 542px) 100vw, 542px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li> GSN3 will check some requirements and  if they are OK, we may click Next<\/li><li>Now the GNS3 will search various directories, including our Download directory, to attempt to find the correct image ( in our case<br><em>fortios.qcow2, <\/em>which we put there).
